Planet Brochures due in class May 10 (B day), May 11 (A day)
INTRODUCTION: The year is 2050, and space travel is no longer science fiction. You are employed by a major advertising company, and your latest assignment is to prepare a travel brochure for another planet in our solar system! The planets are a hot travel spot for the upcoming spring break because this will be the first time that citizens of Earth have the opportunity to visit and vacation on the planet of their choice.
TASK: In this project, your job is to create a travel brochure that will entice vacationers to visit your planet. You will need to convince people that your planet guarantees tourists the ultimate spring getaway! Every planet is different, so it is your job to give as many interesting facts, pictures and information as you can so that vacationers will pick your planet as their vacation destination over any other planet. Acceptable programs to create your tri-fold brochure include Google Docs, Microsoft Publisher, and Microsoft Word. Here's a video tutorial of how to create a tri-fold brochure using Google Docs. (scroll down to the bottom of the page for an example brochure) Your brochure must include:
1.Front Page a. Images and a creative slogan that will appeal to tourists. (All images must have their source listed underneath – see Referencing section, below.)
b. Include your name, date and class block along bottom of first page. (10 points)
2.Inside Pages a.Statistics (20 points) Include a data table that lists the following: i.How far is your planet from the Sun? (in AU) ii.What is the order of this planet from the sun? iii. What is the period of revolution around the sun (length of a year)? iv.What is the period of rotation (length of day)? v.What is the inclination (tilt) of your planet’s axis? vi.How much larger or smaller is the size (equatorial diameter) of your planet to Earth? vii.How much larger or smaller is the mass of your planet compared to Earth? viii.Compare the gravity of your planet to that of Earth. List how much a person weighing 100 lbs on Earth would weigh on your planet. ix.What is the density of your planet? x.How many moons does your planet have? List the names of the largest moons (if there are any.)
b.Climate (20 points) i. Is there an atmosphere? If yes, what is it made of? ii. What are the maximum and minimum temperatures on your planet? iii. What would the weather be like? iv. What types of clothing should travelers pack?
c.Geography (20 points) i. Is the planet rocky or a gas giant? Describe at least two physical features or characteristics of the planet.
d.Attractions (10 points) i. What is available in terms of recreation and entertainment? ii. Use your creativity and imagination; you can create any form of recreation or entertainment you like!
e.Images (10 points) i. Include at least four pictures and images in your brochure. At least one should be an actual photograph of your planet. All images must have their source listed underneath – see Referencing section, below.)
2.Last Page a. Bibliography including at least three sources (see below for format) (10 points)
There are many other sites that may be helpful to you. Search the web! You may also use information from books, encyclopedias and magazines.
REFERENCING PHOTO SOURCES AND CREATING BIBLIOGRAPHY: You must include references for your information sources. Also, remember that all of the writing in your brochure must be your own work. You may not copy any text from your sources! All images you use must have the website’s URL (address) listed directly below the image. Use a very small font size so that the URL doesn’t take up too much room. Do not use a Google images address; go to the actual website the image is from.
At the end of your brochure, you must include a bibliography of all the sources you used. Do not include websites from which you only copied images. I suggest you use:www.easybib.com Just copy and paste the website address of your article and it will create the citation for you! List entries alphabetically by author (if no author list title first) and separate entries with periods.
